Kia L. Hansard has made the decision to run for Harrisburg City Council in the 2009 election. Hansard is no stranger to public service. For more than 10 years, she has been a public servant to her community.

She has worked in the human service field, ranging from domestic violence and sexual assault to pregnancy and homelessness. Hansard has served as an Appointed Board member for the Harrisburg School District and has served on various boards within the community such as the Hemlock Girl Scout Council, Urban League of Metropolitan Harrisburg, Brethren Community Ministries, Fair Housing Council of the Capitol Region and Sylvan Heights Science Charter School. Most recently, she was appointed, by unanimous vote of City Council, to serve as a Commissioner for the Harrisburg Human Relations Commission. Last year, Ms. Hansard was recognized for her efforts as a member of the Harrisburg School District's Elected Board by receiving the Rosa Parks Spirit Award.

She is an alumni of Lincoln University, possessing a Master's in Human Services degree. In addition, she is also an alumni of the Urban Leadership Development Institute. She is currently pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. Hansard is currently employed with Tri-County OIC as an Academic Instructor.

Hansard is a life-long resident of the city. She currently resides with her two children in the Allison Hill area.
